What does this mean for your box?
Producers are announcing higher paper prices and market reports describe price rises in September. That matters if you buy cardboard packaging. But an increase per tonne of paper does not mean a fixed percentage increase for every box.
What do we know?
Several producers have announced October price increases of €100 per tonne for all kraftliner grades in Europe.
The following price increases were reported for various paper grades in September:
- AP-based recycled grades: +€60 per tonne.
- Brown kraftliner: +€80 per tonne.
- White testliner: +€40 per tonne.
- White kraftliner: +€60 per tonne.
These amounts refer to paper prices per tonne. The impact on your box depends on its paper composition and the agreements for your packaging.
What does this mean for October?
The announced paper price increases may feed through into cardboard packaging costs. The impact on your box depends on its paper composition and the agreements for your packaging.
The paper price and the box price are different
A box consists of a particular combination of paper grades and weights. Its size, design, printing, processing and order quantity also contribute. The same paper market development can therefore affect different packs differently.
A producer announcement, an actual market price and a quotation for a box are three different things. Always compare the same grade and terms.
What can you review now?
- Composition: which paper grades and weights does your product need?
- Size: does the box suit the contents and transport?
- Use: what requirements apply to stacking, moisture and transport?
- Quotation: which quantities, deliveries and validity period does the price cover?
A different paper composition may be worth investigating, but it must retain the performance needed. Comparing only paper weight or price is not enough.
